JPG were appointed to provide civil and structural engineering services for the new extension to the dining hall of Cockburn John Charles Academy in Belle Isle, Leeds.
The new extension forms an enlargement of the of the existing dining hall, toilet block and locker areas to allow for the additional pupil numbers at the facility.
The building is constructed as single storey steel frame with external masonry cladding and internal blockwork walls supported on shallow foundations.
The new extension is connected to the existing building structure, which required careful co-ordination between the existing and new structures. Some of the new columns were constructed off the existing foundations due to site constraints so careful assessment of the existing substructure was carried out using a combination of archive information and site surveys.
