JPG have been commissioned by RUP in the latest phase of development at Glasshoughton to create an iconic public attraction to compliment the ‘Butterfly’ office building due to commence on site in 2019.
The scheme provides a combination of gallery space and exhibition space, plus retail space for the sale of factory products. The scheme provides a gross internal area of 6078.9m2.
The use of the building requires clear open spaces which will be achieved using specialist long-span precast floor planks in conjunction with deep exposed steelwork vierendeel girders, together with traditional steelwork framing. The structure will be left exposed in many areas to express the structural form and complexity. In addition, several bespoke staircases feature in the project comprising of both reinforced concrete and steelwork with unusual structural forms.
Complex analysis and design techniques have been adopted using the latest design software to maintain optimum structural efficiency and to achieve the slender appearance. The ground poses its own challenges and requires specialist deep piled foundations to support the heavy superstructure above.
