Holgate Villas is a precast concrete framed building originally built in the early 1960s as an office for the British Rail administrative operation in York, close to the central station.
This latest project is a change of use and will comprise 50 residential apartments with a mixture of one and two-bed units spread over the part three and part five-storey building. As well as the internal refurbishment, the external elevations have been uplifted with a new façade comprising both render and feature cladding. The unusual structural layout of narrow precast columns at close centres supporting thin beam and block floor plates necessitated a series of on-site testing to confirm the load capacity of the frame for the proposed residential use and capacity of the exposed columns to support the new façade.
The development has been renamed ‘The Walk’ and was completed in March 2016.
