New Porsche facility geared up in Reading

The new Porsche Centre based in Reading will provide a new state-of-the-art technician training facility.

As Porsche cars embody long-held principles of intelligent performance, so too do the buildings which has incorporated cutting edge architectural design and energy efficiency measures. In a comprehensive expansion, the Facility is now geared up to train technicians on all makes and models.

JPG have been appointed by PDR Construction to design the new technician training facility at Porsche Cars GB Headquarters in Reading. The two storey building is located within the existing site and will provide training workshop areas with offices and training rooms.

The building comprises of a steel frame, which is supported on precast piled foundations. Careful consideration was given to co-ordinating the new sub-structure works and drainage alongside the existing live facility. As part of the development a link bridge will be provided to allow first floor access to the new building from the existing office areas.

Porsche Cars Great Britain Limited is the sole UK and Ireland importer of Porsche cars and is wholly owned by Porsche AG in Stuttgart. The UK and Ireland are the fourth largest market for Porsche in the world. The UK headquarters have been in Reading, Berkshire, since 1977, and in its current location at Calcot since 1985.

Salt Barn delivered for Bedfordshire County Council

JPG were appointed to provide structural design services to construct a new 5000T bulk storage facility on behalf of Bedfordshire County Council.

The building incorporated precast perimeter retaining walls, ground bearing slab and a galvanised steel frame over a composite membrane.  Given the significant presence of salt, a detailed understanding of the concrete in this environment was required in order to be able to provide an economic long term design solution.

The preliminary design was for a traditional steel framed structure, with internal retaining walls to contain the grit salt. However, Morgan Sindall was keen to explore the potential of a more cost effective method of construction for this project.

JPG structural engineers and Modular Cubed, teamed up with JP Concrete to put together a proposal for an alternative structure. The design would include using a lightweight latticed galvanised steel structure covered with a tensioned composite membrane, supplied by Toro Shelters and precast retaining walls from JP Concrete Products with a fiber reinforced concrete floor slab.

The project was delivered on time and within budget to the delight of the client and main contractor Morgan Sindall.
