The Butterfly, Yorkshire

JPG have been commissioned by a Yorkshire based manufacturer on this landmark office development located adjacent to the M62 motorway at Glasshoughton.

The butterfly form is inspired by the design concept of the “butterfly organiser” manufactured by a Yorkshire based manufacturer and the design aesthetic of the structure is in harmony with the manufacturing heritage of the business featuring fully exposed structural steelwork and exposed building services. The structural form requires the wings of the butterfly to cantilever from the central structure and a diagrid form permits the structure and hexagonal glazing to work together.

The building is sited on reclaimed colliery land and due to the complex wind loading arrangements, requires specialist foundation techniques to be used, similar to those usually only seen in wind turbine installations.

A challenging project soon to be gracing the Yorkshire skyline.
