JJB Fitness – Blackburn

This development comprises an indoor football hall and an integrated two-storey fitness and retail centre in an ’L’ shaped configuration.  The football hall is laid out for eleven five-a-side pitches and the fitness centre comprises a ground floor gym with swimming pool and spa and with an aerobics room at first floor level.  The remaining area of the first floor is given over to retail space.

Built on the side of a hill, the site required an extensive cut/fill earthworks operation to shape up a plateau for the building and car parking.  The football hall is formed by a steel portal frame with two clear spans of 38m giving a building size of 76m x 132m long.  The smaller steel framed fitness centre is 40m wide x 70m long on each of the two floors.

Because the football hall is located over the earthworks fill area, the foundations comprise reinforced concrete pilecaps and ground beams supported on CFA piles.  The fitness centre is founded on mass concrete pad bases.  Surface water drainage incorporates an offline storage pond and restricted discharge, draining via an existing adopted sewer into the reservoir.
