Jamie’s Italian Restaurant, King Street, Manchester
This project was a challenging restoration of one of Manchester’s most cherished Grade II* listed commercial buildings, originally built in the 1930s.
Jamie’s Italian is the first tenant to occupy part of the completed building and trades on the basement, ground and mezzanine floor levels. A 60-bed boutique hotel operates on the upper seven floors.
The design team worked closely with English Heritage to ensure that the important historic original features were incorporated into the design.
The structural works included removal of the former bank safe stores and infilling of a central light well. The Portland stone and faience tile façade was cleaned and repaired and the existing duplex lift shaft was extended into the roof space to serve the sixth floor hotel reception.
