JPG help the Butterfly take flight

JPG were commissioned by Really Useful Product Company to consult on the brand new state-of-the-art innovative flagship Butterfly building which is to be their new head office along with additional manufacturing facilities, at Glasshoughton, Castleford, West Yorkshire.

This brave and bold project is being captured by The Production Company from Leeds who are making this into a documentary about the building and inspiration behind it. The project was born from an idea by Mike Pickles, founder and CEO of Really Useful Products and designed in association with The Harris Partnership supported by JPG.

The butterfly form is inspired by the design concept of the “butterfly organiser” manufactured by a Yorkshire based manufacturer and the design aesthetic of the structure is in harmony with the manufacturing heritage of the business featuring fully exposed structural steelwork and exposed building services. This complex structural form requires the wings of the butterfly to cantilever from the central structure and a diagrid form permits the structure and hexagonal glazing to work together.

A challenging project that you will see emerging in 2016 on the Yorkshire skyline. When completed the manufacturing facility will be four times bigger than the company’s current site, while the flagship office element will complete in 2017.
